TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SWEETHEART PROGRAM

Reasons for your chapter to have a Sweetheart:

A. To help with chapter activities
B. To help recruit new members.
C. To have a good friend to all the members.
D. To represent the chapter at Workshop and Conclave.

Selection process:

A. Set a date for your election before October 24th.

B. Contact young ladies between the ages of 14 and 18 to tryout. If your chapter requires the ladies to be either a Rainbow or Job's Daughter, contact the assemblies and bethels in your area and issue an invitation for them to tryout. The candidate’s parents should be aware of the duties of the sweetheart and give their consent for her participation.

C. Decide if they will do a talent presentation and/or answer questions and inform the candidates of the requirements for the evening's competition.

D. Each candidate should bring a written resume so it can be read with her talent presentation or question/answer segment. Make your questions easy to answer, i.e., what can you do to help our chapter, will you be available to go to Workshop and Conclave and other activities the chapter, etc.

E. Voting should be done by all the DeMolays at the meeting and the winner announced that evening. If you want to have a dance, do it to honor your new sweetheart at a later date, not to announce the winner.

Your sweetheart should be friendly and out-going to all the DeMolays in your chapter. It is usually not a good idea to elect a sweetheart just because she is the sister of or dating one of your brothers. You should always treat your sweetheart as a lady and you should always act like a gentleman when she is around. Remember to keep her informed about all chapter activities and make her feel she is included and you want her participation.
